The Problem

Every year the company launches a new flagship smartphone lineup with multiple models, tiers, and features. Sales reps in retail stores need to understand the differences between models, know the trade-in values, answer common customer questions, and position the right device for each customer — all within days of launch.

The traditional approach was a 45-minute eLearning module completed before launch day and a PDF cheat sheet. Post-launch surveys consistently showed that reps forgot most of the details by the time they were on the sales floor, and the PDF was too dense to reference during a live customer conversation.

The Real Gap

Reps didn't need more training — they needed better performance support. The problem wasn't that they couldn't learn the information; it was that they couldn't access it when they needed it most: standing in front of a customer asking "what's different about this one?"

Needs Assessment

I observed reps during the previous product launch and noticed a consistent pattern: when a customer asked a comparison question ("is the Pro worth it over the standard?"), reps would either make something up, defer to a printed spec sheet behind the counter, or default to "the Pro is just better." None of these approaches closed sales effectively.

I also reviewed the existing PDF guide and timed how long it took to find a specific answer — an average of 22 seconds of scrolling through a 14-page document. On a busy launch weekend, that's an eternity.

Design Approach

I designed the knowledge guide as an interactive, tabbed web tool rather than a static document. The design principles were simple: any answer should be accessible in under 3 seconds, the interface should work on a phone screen (since reps carry their devices on the floor), and the content should be organized by what customers actually ask — not by how the product team organized their spec sheets.

The guide has four layers: clickable model cards that expand to show specs, a features tab that highlights what to actually say to customers (not just technical specs), a "things to know" tab with gotchas and common mistakes, and a customer Q&A section with ready-made responses to the six most common questions.

I included a comparison table at the bottom for reps who want to see everything side by side, but the primary interaction is designed to be model-first: tap the model the customer is looking at, get everything you need.

Development

The guide was built as a responsive HTML page so it could be accessed on any device without downloading an app. I also produced a version for the company's internal learning portal. Visual design was a priority — I created custom SVG device illustrations for each model card and used the brand color system throughout.

AI tools were used to draft the customer Q&A section. I fed the product spec sheets and competitive positioning documents into an AI tool and had it generate realistic customer questions and draft responses, which I then refined with input from top-performing retail managers.

The interactive guide replaced the static PDF entirely. Managers reported that reps were more confident in model comparison conversations and trade-in discussions. The format was adopted as the standard template for all subsequent product launch guides.

What I'd Do Differently

I'd add a "live updates" section that pushes real-time inventory availability and promotional changes during launch weekend. I'd also build a quick quiz mode where reps can self-test on key talking points during downtime between customers.
